58. Aesop's Fables - The Old Man and the Death

Once there lived a labourer. He earned his living by carried heavy loads on waggon.

Over years of toiling, the man had grown old and weak. He was unable to pull the waggon anymore. He started fetching firewood from the forest and sold it to earn his living.

One day, when the old man went to the forest for collecting wood, he grew very helpless and tired. He threw away the bundle of sticks he had gathered and cried, 'Pity me God! I am too weak and old to work now. I cannot bear the burden of this life any longer. Grant me my death now!'

As he cried in agony, death in form of a grisly skeleton appeared and said, 'O mortal! I heard you call me. I am the death'.

The old man pleaded to the death, 'O Death! I called you as I could not lift this heavy log of woods on my shoulder. Kindly help me in lifting these sticks to my shoulder'.

Moral:  Sometimes we feel sorry when our wishes are gratified.
