41. Aesop's Fables -The Dog in the Manger

Once there lived a dog in a village. He had no home of his own. So he roamed around and slept where ever it found place.

One year it was extremely cold. The animals shivered with cold.

The dog had a thin fur and felt the cold in his bones. It was hungry and cold stuck. So he gathered strength to go around in search of a warm shelter for sometime.

The village had a large farm. The farmowner kept the farm warm with heating. The dog went to the farm and quietly jumped into the manger. The manger belonged to an ox. The dog lied on the stack of straws and soon fell asleep in the cosy inside.

After sometime, the farm manager returned with the ox.

When the ox came and started pulling the straw. The dog was asleep on the straw heap, woke up in startle and anger. He barked furiously at the ox and attempted to bite it.

Hearing the noise, the farm owner came hurriedly. He chased the dog away from his farm.

The dog ran out fearing beating and abuse. He said to himself, 'I am fine coming out of that clumsy farm. It was just a heap of straws not wool that was all around there'.

Moral: People often grudge others what they cannot enjoy themselves.
