47. Aesop's Fables - The Battle between the Beasts and the Birds

Once there was a beautiful forest. The forest was dwelled by various birds and beasts.

One day, a bird came and pecked at young one  of a beast. The young one received several injuries and died in agony. When the beast came to know about it, they destroyed the nests of birds and killed their nestling. The birds got together to revenge on the beast and
flagged a war against them.

The battle began and there was much bloodshed in the forest. The cries of beasts and birds echoed through the forest.

After few days of rigorous  battling, the number if birds declined. Do the birds decided to approach the bats. The leader of birds said, 'Friend, cone and join our army and fight against the beasts'.

The bats however refused saying, 'No friend, I belong to the clan of beasts and cannot fight from your side. Pardon me please!'

The beasts wanted to strengthen their army. So they went to the bats asked them to join the beast army. But the bats again refused, saying, 'Friend, we bats have wings and are more close to birds. We cannot join the beast army. Please pardon us!'

After few days, the beast and birds entered a peace pact realizing that bloodshed would lead to more loose of life and would lead the battling nowhere.

The beast and birds got together for rejoicing the end of war. The bats desired to join the party. So they went to birds, and after congratulating them asked if they can join the birds in rejoicing. But the birds politely refused and asked him to leave.

The bats then thought of approaching the beasts.

When the bats when to the beasts, the leader of beasts grew angry and said, 'You never helped us when we needed you. Leave our territory now or we shall kill all of you'.

The bats were humbled. They realized their mistake and promised to keep good friends in future.

Moral: (1) He that is neither one thing nor the other has no friends, (2) People are expected to be loyal and stick by their friends (or those who practice deceit must expect to be shunned).
