17. Aesop's Fables - The Fox and the Cat

Once there lived a fox in a forest. The fox had a friend who was a cat.

The fox and her friend, often went out of hunting together. They even shared their food and played together behind the brushes and lept small trees. One day, after their meal, the cat and the fox began to argue over their cleverness.

The fox boasted to the cat, 'I am very clever. With my tricks, I escape from the reach of my enemies'. The cat was humble. She replied, 'Friend, I do not have many tricks. It is rather one trick that has always helped me in escaping my enemies'.

While they talked, a pack of hound came approaching towards them. The fox and the cat came on alert.

The cat rushed through the bushes and scampered up the nearest tree. She was out of breadth, but seated quietly on a bushy branch hiding herself.

The fox on the other hand, first got angry on the cat. 'She left me alone in time of adversity', the fox thought to herself. Then she thought of  running up and hiding behind brushes. But it was easy for hounds to walk through the wild and find her, so she began thinking of another idea. She thought of clinging behind the tree so that the hounds could not see her. But she was again divided over this idea. While she was thinking of another possibility, the hounds   were almost near to her.

The hounds caught the fox and the huntsmen killed her.

Moral: (1) Better one safe way than a hundred on which you cannot reckon (2) Be master of one trade, rather be jack of all trades.
