Buddha

The story 'Buddha' relates to the characters of two teachers - Tanzan and Unsho who lived in Tokyo city during Meiji Era.

Unsho was an instructor in Shingon. He followed Buddha's precepts and never drank toxicants. He followed discipline in day to day life and had no meals after eleven in the morning.
His peer, Tanzan instructed philosophy. He was intoxicant and undisciplined in his eating and sleeping habbits.

One day when Tanzan was drinking wine, Unsho came over. Tanzan welcomed him and said, "Would like to have a drink?"

Unsho was annoyed. He said, "I donot drink!"

Hearing this Tanzan laughed and said, "He who does not drink is not a human".

Unsho was angry to hear Tanzan. He asked Tanzan, "You mean that I am inhuman because I do not drink such intoxicating liquids ?... If I am not a human then tellme who am I ?"

Tanzan replied solmnely, "You are 'A Buddha' ..."
