The Silent Temple

The story is about an enlighened Zen master, Shoichi. Shoichi was one-eyed. He taught at Tofuku temple.

Shoichi restricted sound in the temple. No bells were rung. The chanting of mantras could be done only silently. His disciples were not allowed to speak, observe silence and meditate.

One day Shoichi passed away.

An old neighbor heard the sound of bells emanting from temple. The echo of chants echoed and filled the still space in and around the temple. Her wisdom said Shoichi had gone.
